My Teaching Philosophy

I have been teaching for as long as I can remember. In many ways, I began teaching even before I realized that this was what I was doing. My mother, who was herself a teacher, used to say that when I grew up I would probably become a lawyer, because I was good at persuading people and explaining ideas. In a sense, she was right: teaching is also about inviting students into discovery, encouraging them to explore, understand, and grow.

Throughout my professional life, I have worked endlessly to refine my musical knowledge and skills. Over time, this process has led me back to the most basic and fundamental elements of music-making. At its core, music involves simple and essential human activities: we play or sing, and we listen.
Playing music begins with the spirit of play itself, the curiosity and freedom we experience when we engage in a game. Listening, in its most profound sense, is not only a musical skill but a fundamental life skill, and perhaps one of the most important abilities we can develop. Singing is one of the most direct and natural forms of expression. Birds sing, and it is no coincidence that we use the expression “to sing one’s heart out.” Singing represents a deep and instinctive human need to express ourselves through sound.

As a teacher, I aim to connect these fundamental experiences of music with the highest level of musicianship. I invite my students to join me on this exciting journey.
